Imagine you spend all the time and money to put together a Super Bowl ad and less than a week before the “Big Game”, you find out it won’t air. FOX’s Chris Hoenig reports: Health supplement retailer GNC has been told that their Super Bowl commercial, which is already produced, has been banned by the NFL: (GNC) “Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t change. That is what life is, change.” The issue, according to the company’s executive vice president, is that three percent of their products contain two substances that are among the more than 100 banned by the league. Neither synephrine nor DHEA is banned by the Food and Drug Administration, but the NFL considers one a stimulant, the other an anabolic agent. GNC had paid a premium on top of the $5-million to get a coveted spot in the first quarter, with the ad set to showcase their change in business strategy. The company is exploring its legal options.
